Every home office needs a unique accessory and choosing a well-designed desk lamp could be the perfect complement for your desktop.
We have chosen ten of our favorite desk lamp designs because we feel all these are timeless due to their exceptional quality of composition, materials, and finishes.
The following text about design details for each lamp is from the manufacturer. Technical information for the lamps along with pricing can be found at the manufacture’s websites in the links we have provided. All the lamps use light emitting diodes-LEDs.
1-AJ
By Arne Jacobsen in 1960 and produced by Louis Poulsen
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ desk lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.
Louis Poulsen has always sought, not only to design lamps, but also to shape light and create an atmosphere that makes people feel good, both indoors and outdoors. The shape of light creates space, and our products should live harmoniously within the area they define – indirect, soft, and inviting.
The fixture emits downward directed light. The angle of the shade can be adjusted to optimize light distribution. The shade is painted white on the inside to ensure a soft, comfortable light.
2-Tab
By Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby in 2011 and produced by FLOS
Beautifully simple, the Tab desk lamp provides directional task lighting.
Tab has a painted die-cast aluminum structure and a porcelain reflector.
Adjust the pivoting head to provide directional light.
Offered with energy-efficient LED lamping. On/Off switch located on the cord. Body in painted aluminum. Multi-led diffuser in specially designed PMMA to avoid the Multi Shadow effect and dazzle. Head rotation is ±45°.
4-Pixo
By Fernando Pardo and Pablo Pardo in 2012 and produced by Pablo Designs
The Pixo Plus desk lamp from Pablo Designs is a compact and energy-efficient LED task lamp that is perfect for use on a desk, end table, or nightstand.
Designed for movement, Pixo’s rotating arm and head allow you to direct its warm and bright light source where you need it most.
The Pixo Plus features a wireless charging base to keep up with modern technology. The desk lamp is offered in a wide range of colors, suitable for any space.
5-Marselis
By kaschkasch in 2018 and produced by HAY
The Marselis desk lamp was inspired by classically curved lampposts and street signs.
Marselis features a 360-degree rotating diffuser that can be adjusted to emit both ambient and direct light via an integrated LED.
The lamp consists of a frame made of powder-coated die-cast aluminum and steel.
6-Peek
By Jonas Wagell in 2015 and produced by Menu
The Peek desk lamp is simplistic, humble, and somewhat quirky. This modern lamp features a heavy base and a long slender stem and shade.
With the ability to adapt to your needs, Peek swivels 360 degrees around the base, and the shade can be turned in any direction.
The base features a concave top creating a bowl for essential stationery, earplugs, jewelry, or other small items.
To dim the light, simply touch the tip of the stem. Perfect for casting diffused, direct light, use this lamp as a reading light, as your new best friend on your desk or as the last thing you see before you close your eyes at night.
7-Focal
By Jonas Wagell in 2016 and produced by Design Within Reach
The Focal desk lamp sprouted from Jonas Wagell’s need for order and “freakish organization.”
With a built-in USB port and shallow dish for holding small items, its base is weighted to provide a counterbalance for the lamp head, which tilts left or right and also spins 180 degrees on its slim post for precise lighting control at three brightness levels.
8-Buddy
By Mads Sætter-Lassen in 2016 and produced by Northern
The winner of the Northern Student Design Award for 2015 is Buddy, a LED desk lamp with an extra feature, a small functional storage unit as its base.
9-Tip
By Jens Fager in 2017 and produced by Muuto.
For the Tip desk lamp, the designer concentrated on creating a “clean and precise look” through a meticulous focus on detail and an emphasis on functionality.
The piece has a clean, geometric look accentuated by the simple lines of its angular arms.
Its uniform finish adds to the seamless look of the piece, which features an adjustable head and arm for focused or ambient lighting.
The piece exemplifies the highly functional minimalist quality of Scandinavian design.
10-NJP
By Nendo-Oki Sato in 2015 and produced by Louis Poulsen.
The NJP desk lamp provides direct glare-free horizontal light while reflecting some of the light through the rear of the head, illuminating the top of the arm.
The ergonomic design of the fixture head shapes the light and gives optimal light direction.
A simple mechanical system provides great freedom of movement, so the light can always be set in the ideal position in the workspace.
The shade is painted white on the inside, reflecting comfortable diffused light.
